Herts Girls Pathway Hit the Ground Running

Greg Mackett

From U13s to U18s, Hertfordshire’s girls have made a strong start to a packed summer of pathway cricket.

The Hertfordshire Girls Pathway has enjoyed a busy and exciting start to the summer, with players across the Under 13, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 age groups all pulling on the Herts shirt during a packed opening few weeks of fixtures.

The competitive season began on Sunday 3 May, with the Under 14s making an excellent start away to Cricket East. A strong all-round performance saw Herts restrict their opponents to 82 before chasing the target down confidently, finishing on 85 for 1 to get their campaign up and running in style. Padayachy was at the heart of the performance, combining an unbeaten 43 with a brilliant spell of 4 for 6.

The following day, the Under 16s produced one of the standout team performances of the early summer at Hitchin Cricket Club. Batting first against Lincolnshire, Herts posted an impressive 269 before backing it up with a disciplined bowling and fielding display to restrict Lincolnshire to 114 for 9. Mitchell led the way with a superb 92, while Davis returned excellent figures of 2 for 12 as Herts completed a dominant 155-run win.

There was another high-scoring contest on 24 May in the county knockout cup against Bucks. Herts showed plenty of fight in reply to a challenging total, scoring 234 in pursuit of 255. Although Bucks came out on top, the game provided another valuable opportunity for the players to test themselves in a competitive 40-over fixture, with Herts continuing to show positive intent with the bat and resilience under pressure.

The Under 18s were next in action on 25 May, with two T20 fixtures against Cricket East. The first game proved to be a tight contest, with Herts finishing just short in the chase. The group responded superbly in the second fixture, chasing 174 with five wickets in hand to round off the day with a strong win and a performance that showed real character and resilience.

Hertfordshire’s 150th Cricket Week then provided a brilliant backdrop for more girls’ pathway cricket on 26 May. The Under 13s took centre stage against Suffolk, producing an excellent 53-run win after posting 170 for 8 and restricting Suffolk to 117 for 8. It was a fantastic example of the depth of talent coming through the younger age groups and a proud moment for the players to be part of such a special week in the county’s history.

The Under 14s were also in T20 action during cricket week, taking on Suffolk in two fixtures at Hertford. Herts won the first game after posting 162 for 4 and restricting Suffolk to 146 for 9, before Suffolk responded in the second match to chase 167. Across the two games, the squad showed plenty of positive intent with the bat, shared the honours on the day and gained more valuable experience in pressure moments.

The busy run of fixtures concluded on 28 May with the Under 16s back in action against Cambridgeshire at Cokenach CC. In another closely fought contest, Herts were set 201 to win and battled hard in reply, finishing on 187. While the result narrowly went Cambridgeshire’s way, the game added another important learning opportunity for a group continuing to grow throughout the summer.

Across the opening weeks of the season, the pathway has already seen strong performances, close contests, impressive wins and valuable development opportunities. From Padayachy’s all-round impact, to Mitchell’s 92, Davis’ wickets, and strong team contributions across every age group, there has been plenty for players, coaches and supporters to be excited about.

Just as importantly, the players have represented Hertfordshire with energy, pride and togetherness. With so much cricket already played, and plenty more still to come, it has been a brilliant start to the summer for the Herts Girls Pathway.
